The population is made up of about 7,000 people spanning over 2.26 square miles. The Coast Miwok People initially inhabited the land until around 1775 when Don Jose de Canizares settled the area. In 1887 the United States post office was opened, and during World War II, the city helped the home front by housing a shipbuilding center. Sausalito is derived from the Spanish word, "sauzaltio" which stands for small willow grove. Sausalito is connected to other areas in the world through the sister city program. Vina del Mar, Chile and Sakaide, Kagawa, Japan and Cascais, Portugal are the three chosen sister cities for Sausalito, California.
